Just a short drive along some corrugated road from Cooktown and we arrived at Hope Vale. We were invited to visit by Dora who met us at the Far North Qld Country Music Festival. It’s been about nine or so years since Dave’s been here but a first time for Shelly. The Community up here seem so happy. We got to hang out with some local kids in the afternoon that had fun picking fruit off the trees at the Pastor’s manse. They were absolutely fascinated with Zoe as had not really seen a little fluffy long eared dog before. One came up to Shelly saying “who dat dog?” and thus began some great conversation.
Our reason for coming to Hope Vale was to take part in a Country Gospel night that Dora had arranged in the Lutheran Church. The pastors of Hopevale are David & Pam, they have big hearts for Hope Vale. They have lived up there for 30 years working in the town beforehand and have lead the church for the past seven years. They also commute to Wujal Wujal and Cohen communities to run services each week.
The Gospel night was very special; we could see the impact the church and the Lord has had in Hopevale. Each performer brought a short testimony prior to singing and you could feel God’s presence in their stories. It was a delight to share a couple of our songs from Deeper and for Dave to bring a message.
We camped in the church yard overnight and slept safe and sound. After sharing breakfast with David and Pam it was time to roll up our sleeves and help out practically. Dave mowed the manse yard and did a home delivery with David. Shelly helped Pam in the churches op shop. What a gift to the town it is. Many came in that morning and you can see that they are blessed by having a place to come and buy clothes and household items. Pam told us how they rely on the op shop to help finance their work in Hopevale and also how they often scout out garage sales in Cairns and are given clothes to help resource the shop. These guys work tirelessly for the ministry and it’s a true demonstration of the Love of Jesus working through them.
